Belgian Girl’s Rapist Gets 10 Years – Updated 1 March: Parents in Rival Gangs

February 29, 2012 2 comments

Raurangi Marino sentenced to 10 years in prison

Raurangi Marino, a 16 year old youth, has been sentenced to only 10 years in prison for burglary and the brutal assault and rape of a 5 year old tourist in Turangi.

Marino had earlier pleaded guilty to charges of burglary, sexual violation by rape and causing grievous bodily harm. His young victim was only 5 years old when Marino attacked her as she lay sleeping in her family’s caravan at the Club Habitat holiday park in Turangi. It is thought that the European family were on holiday from Belgium.

Marino is rumoured to have inflicted horrendously sadistic injuries on the little girl, too graphic to repeat here and she will likely bear the scars for life. One has to question if 10 years is a sufficient punishment for this crime, given that he could be out on parole and back into the community in a few years. The NZ public should insist that a condition of any parole is that he has no contact with gang members.

Further details were released about what happened on the night of the attack, it seems that the girl was not asleep when Marino attacked her

WHAT HAPPENED

Inside the caravan, Raurangi Marino locked the door and grabbed the girl around the neck as she tried to flee.

He began to choke her in an attempt to stop her screams; he did so with such force that she passed out. Then he began to beat her about the face and body with his fists and elbows while sexually assaulting her.

The attack on the girl left her with four teeth knocked out and serious internal injuries.

Both her eyes were swollen shut and she had cuts and bruising to her face.

She was rushed to Waikato Hospital in a life-threatened condition and underwent surgery for 4½ hours.

The family is deeply traumatised by the attack and say their dream New Zealand holiday had been turned into a nightmare

Judge Cooper said the girl had suffered significant emotional trauma and there could be consequences for her when she was an adult.

Marino confessed to police several days later. Judge Cooper said the attack had impacted enormously on the girl’s parents and they were showing signs of post traumatic stress disorder…

…Rotorua Crown Solicitor Fletcher Pilditch said “heads had been shaking the breadth of the country” and the community of New Zealand had been bewildered at how “one of our own” could commit such a brutal attack.

The victim and her family had come to New Zealand to enjoy “its places, people and peace”.

Mr Pilditch referred to comments made by the victim’s mother that their dream holiday in New Zealand had turned into a nightmare.

We don’t understand why New Zealand is so bewildered by this attack, take one look at Marino’s upbringing – it’s not at all unusual in New Zealand, it takes society to raise a child and it is failing thousands of them every day.

Lenient sentence is “a joke”

There have been calls for Marino’s sentence to be extended and the ODT reported that the judge, showing a compassion for Marino that was denied to his victim,  had scaled back the sentence from a starting point of 18 years

Aucklander Tamsin Marshall, who is launching a petition for cumulative sentences instead of concurrent sentences as a result of this case, described the sentence as a joke and said Marino should be serving 19 years’ jail.

“If we were in America he would be locked up for a long time.”…

…Judge Cooper said the starting point was 18 years’ jail but reduced the sentence to 10 years, acknowledging Marino’s early guilty plea, his dysfunctional background and remorse.

Once Were Warriors upbringing

According to the report in The New Zealand Herald Marino came from a dysfunctional background and was caught up with New Zealand’s shameful and ever present gang culture. It sounds very much like a Once Were Warriors upbringing:

“The court heard how Marino had come from a troubled, violent background and dysfunctional family and was drunk at the time of the attack and could recall little of it.

He had been bullied, abused, attempted suicide and began taking drugs and alcohol from an early age, the court heard.

The families of both of his parents had been involved in gangs…”

His mother,  Lavina Wall, who had been involved with the Black Power gang, reportedly gave a dismal account of family life in New Zealand and her failings as a parent, saying

“I didn’t safeguard my children, and I didn’t apply myself to looking after them“…

…Ms Wall, a former Black Power associate, said her son endured regular beatings at home.

“I wanted it to stop but I couldn’t because I was a hard-out alcoholic and it was the family versus me.”

Raurangi Marino’s father, Mark Marino was involved with the rival Mongrel Mob and is an ex convict.

Marino’s father, Mark Marino – a Taupo Mongrel Mob member – said he feared for his son’s safety in prison.

Having served time himself, he knew of prisoners with similar convictions who “just disappeared” in jail.

“The sad thing is that everyone wants him to be chucked in with the lions. From my experience not all like him come out. I’m not able to help him now; he will be on his own for a while.”

Bit late to be wanting to help your son now Mr Marino, where we you for the last 16 years. Where were you the night your son got out of his skull and raped that little girl?

The above photograph, taken over a year ago, comes from Raurangi Marino’s Facebook profile, F.T.P. means f*ck the police and Killah is his ‘gangsta’ name. Another photograph shows him posing in front of a mirror. More pleasant shots    show him as part of a Kapa Haka group.

Gang connections tipped months ago

Earlier the Sunday Star Times had reported that Marino’s family had gang connections:

The Star-Times understands the teen’s father had been associated with the gang, but not since the attack, which shocked New Zealand in the lead-up to Christmas. The boy’s father cannot be named for legal reasons.

The claims were made by several sources close to the investigation.

The family and the boy are connected to a gang,” one said. “The family is gang-associated. It’s not just the father.”

Another source said: “The family are well-recognised as being what they are … rotten apples. Where are you heading in society when you have this underbelly?”…

…The Star-Times has been shown a photo that shows him posing, shirtless, with a gang nickname and an anti-police slogan clearly visible.”

Around Christmas time talk of gang problems in the township, which is 6 kilometres from the Tongariro-Rangipo Prison, was already leaking out.

At the time the New Zealand Herald reported that gang members were seen in the neighbouring reserve shortly before the attack, saying:

“Neighbours who live across the road from the holiday park told the Herald that the Mongrel Mob were out in “full force” on Wednesday night.

Gang members were partying at a home in nearby Raukura St and the residents saw a blue or grey van and black hatchback vehicle parked outside the reserve next to the camping ground between 9.30pm and 10pm…”

Turangi locals had also  said that the Mongrel Mob was out in force on the night that the girl was attacked. We also knew that members of the Notorious Chapter of the Mongrel Mob have been involved in the Salvation Army’s residential Hauora treatment programme (for P addicts) which had been held at the holiday camp.

Drugs and excessive alcohol

Whether the use of the drug P was involved in this incident is unclear but a report the day after sentencing did say that Marino had been drinking and taking drugs which included cannabis:

The court was told how Marino was high on alcohol and drugs after drinking 20 to 30 bottles of beer, and RTDs, as well as smoking cannabis at a work function and party.

The youth had been drinking for 8-10 hours at an “unsupervised party” prior to the attack. There was no mention of gang members being present at that party and the defence may have keen to play down any active links to the Mongrel Mob so as to not adversely influence sentencing. We expect more about this to be revealed as time progresses.

Carterton Ballooning Tragedy, Urgent Checks Follow Air Worthiness Concerns

February 23, 2012 Leave a comment

The Civil Aviation Authority has recommended urgent checks of all hot air balloons in New Zealand  after an inquiry revealed possible air worthiness problems.

The inquiry was launched after 11 people were killed in a hot air balloon fire in Carterton last month. Read blog Balloon Clips Powerlines, 11 People Killed In Fireball.

According to a report in today’s Stuff headed Carterton tragedy Balloon airworthiness questioned

“The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has launched an urgent inquiry following “serious” findings of a report into the Carterton balloon tragedy.

The balloon, which crashed in Carterton on January 7 killing 11 all people on board, might not have been airworthy, investigators found.

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) has released preliminary findings showing several maintenance requirements were not followed by those operating the balloon, including procedures for inspecting the balloon’s burners and fuel system, and a “grab test” to test the strength of the balloon material.

As a result TAIC has recommended that Civil Aviation make an urgent check of New Zealand’s 74 hot air balloons to test for airworthiness…”   read the full article here

Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those who died, this must be a very difficult time for them.

Until all hot air balloons in New Zealand have been checked to ensure they meet maintenance requirements our recommendation is to postpone or cancel your ballooning experience.

If the transport Accident Investigation Commission chief commissioner John Marshall, QC wouldn’t get into a balloon whose maintenance requirements hadn’t been met, why would you?

The CAA said it had launched an investigation into the maintenance of hot air balloons in the wake of the TAIC report.

“The apparent breaches of the manufacturer’s procedures and the civil aviation rules are obviously sufficiently serious for us to make a recommendation,” Marshall said.

If he was a passenger and knew about the breaches, he would not have been willing to continue the flight.

“If I had known as a person about to get into a balloon that maintenance requirements had not been complied with, obviously, personally, I wouldn’t get into that balloon.”

Earlier, acting director of Civil Aviation John Lanham said the findings of the report were very serious.

Find a safer way to enjoy New Zealand, and never assume that the safety standards that apply in your own country also apply there.

Stephen Fry’s NZ Broadband Tweets And The Entrepreneurs Organization Conference

February 21, 2012 5 comments

There’s been a Mega embarrassment for New Zealand this week as Stephen Fry criticised the lack of a decent broadband service at the same time that the Entrepreneurs Organization (EO) were having their international ‘university’ conference in Queenstown.

Stephen Fry made the comments in his Twitter blogs. It’s shocking that the country that brought you Avatar in glorious 3D, and the Mega Upload/Dotcom scandal, can’t even offer a reasonably priced, first world broadband communications service:

The EO is an international grouping of 8000 business founders from 40 countries. It meets twice a year to offer inspiration and networking opportunities. Among those present in Queenstown are Craig Nevill-Manning, director of engineering at Google; his wife Kirsten, director of human resources at Facebook; Sarah Robb O’Hagan, PepsiCo’s Gatorade president North America and global chief marketing office;, and Linda Jenkinson, founder of multinational provider of concierge services Les Concierges (source) So far none of them have yet tweeted about New Zealand’s internet, nor given public comment.

But this is what Stephen Fry had to say to his Twitter followers.

New Zealand so fine. It they have probably the worst. Broadband I’ve ever encountered. Turns itself off slows to a crawl. Pathetic. Rise up, Kiwis and demand better? You wouldn’t allow crap roads with pot holes and single file. Hats what youve got BBwise a smart guy could I know, it’s feeble to moan. I’m on set now. It’s 6:15 and the wifi here is good. But I have So many videos and sound files to upload.

I’m sure another couple of flat whites will cheer me up…I meant “make (not male) a fortune and a fool of the complacent Telecomm and their contemptuous attitude to customers. Phew! Rant over.”

Then later, when the news of his tweets had filtered out he added:

“Well, seem to have stirred up a hornet’s nest. It seems I exceeded a d’load limit and had my BB throttled to a crawl: @TelecomNZ have put this right. Very quick and polite. But I wonder if everyone who complains gets this attention? I think Comcast style throttling is a for the economy it’s disastrous, for visitors for everyone. It won’t stop illegal bit torrentinf. Makes as much sense as closing a lane of traffic because there’s congestion.

Yes, kiwi land is remote, but if Avatar can be made here and MZ wants to keep its rep for being the loveable, easy-going, outdoorsy yet tech savvy place it is, then pressure @telecomNZ into offering better packages.

Kiwis travel. A lot. They know 20MB is routine in Europe ( nothrottling) UK rolling out ultra fast fibreoptic. S Korea miles ahead

Instead of being a technologically advanced and internet savvy country, New Zealand’s broadband services are third rate.

Come on New Zealand. You’re world champions at rugby & filmmaking. Pressure the providers to stop it being a digital embarrassment.”

Mr Fry has struck a chord with many New Zealanders who have backed up his comments in many ways. This is what they’re saying on the message board at TradeMe.co.nz

  • Good on you Stephen, get your own back ! No one here picked up the Baftas, which I hear you did a marvellous job of compering.
  • Stephen fry is right about the data caps and slow speeds. New Zealand’s broadband is a major digital embarrassment, and it’s disastrous for our economy.  John Key can say “oh, but in five years time we’ll have ULTRA ULTRA fast broadband”. But guess what, we should have ADSL2 by now, but most of us don’t. When fibre comes out, it’ll be expensive. In the meanwhile, enjoy your ADSL1, suckers!
  • Telecom sucks our money up and invests it in Australia.
  • I agree its crap. Slow. Limited. Time to vote off THE WEAKEST LINK. Telecon for starters.
  • We’re getting a big one rammed right up us…….bone dry.
  • It’s nothing we all didn’t know and the govt are throwing millions of taxpayers money at an inefficient service.
  • we in tauranga are getting ultra fast broadband,, coming soon installing now,, wooppee,, contractor is getting 5mil for the job,.,
  • My bro lives in Japan and says our boradband is slow compared to theirs,,
  • We have had really fast VDSL2 available in my area for nearly 2 years but no one seems to be selling it – we will soon be getting the fibre UFBB in a couple of months, too.
  • slingshot is so slow in the evenings that if you want to post on this  MB you have to do it the day before,I put up this reply yesterday, hope it makes it in time,if you cant see it it hasn’t arrived yet
  • Dont believe it will be cheap when it does come, does anyone believe government propaganda, we will be fleeced n milked for it, especially with line charges. they were laying fiber optic cable back in 1987, its not new tech, they could have done it all 20 years ago.
  • We are slow compared to everyone else in the world, not just Japan. NZ seems to be the only country that puts a cap on broadband…

Herewini, Any Relation?

February 21, 2012 Leave a comment

It has been confirmed that four males have been charged with the stabbing murder of 64 year old Polish man  Roman Skorek in a Rotorua’s Kuirau Park last month.

Two are un-named youths aged 14 and 15, the others are Simon Meka Herewini, 20, and Rawiri James Samuel, 21.

Co-incidentally, Simon Meka Herewini bears the same family name as someone who was caught up in aftermath of the  murder of Scottish tourist Karen Aim, namely Leigh Herewini.

34 year old Leigh Herewini found Karen dying from her injuries on a Taupo street in January 2008 . He was a security guard at a school near to where she was found and said he was responding to an alarm at the school when he discovered her.

Local youth Jache Broughton, who was 14 at the time of the attack, later changed his plea to guilty of her murder.

In a court hearing  Herewini gave evidence that Broughton had shown him the murder weapon in the days following the killing:

“The teenager accused of murdering Scottish tourist Karen Aim allegedly hid the baseball bat he used to kill her under his house and then showed the bloodstained, dented object to a man he knew.

Leigh Herewini, a 34-year-old security guard, said he felt “uncomfortable” when he saw the bat because “it could’ve been the bat that hurt the girl”.

Mr Herewini was testifying at the second day of a depositions hearing at the Taupo Youth Court yesterday.

The accused, who was 14 when he allegedly murdered Ms Aim in January, stared at Mr Herewini while he gave evidence.

But Mr Herewini avoided his gaze and told the court the accused had shown him the baseball bat when he had gone to his house about two or three days after Ms Aim was killed.

“It had a lot of dents and bitsmissing off it,” Mr Herewini said. “It looked like it had blood on it.”

He said the accused had called him on the day Ms Aim was killed and told him he knew who was responsible for the murder.

“He said it was a guy Bryan, a Mongrel Mob prospect from Rotorua.”

Leigh Herewini also helped Broughton cover up the savage bashing of another female in Taupo, this from the NZ Herald, 6 February 2009. Reporting of it was suppressed for fear of prejudicing Broughton’s trial for the murder of Karen Aim:

Security guard shielded Karen Aim’s killer

The security guard who called police to report smashed windows at a Taupo college on the night Karen Aim’s body was found nearby had earlier helped Jahche Broughton to cover up the bashing of another female.

The guard, Leigh Herewini, 37, was the former partner of Broughton’s aunt and would often take the 14-year-old on security rounds with him.

Leigh Herewini was found guilty of being an accessory after the fact.

Broughton then went to Herewini’s house, where the guard helped to stash the girl’s stolen pink handbag.

Herewini was working the night Ms Aim was murdered and helped to cordon off the scene. He was charged with being an accessory after the fact and sentenced to five months’ community detention and six months’ supervision.

The case, in Rotorua in November, was not covered by the media because details of his part in the crime were suppressed for fear they would prejudice Broughton’s trial. Suppression orders were lifted yesterday following the young killer’s guilty plea.

Herewini testified against Broughton during a depositions hearing in September.

Small world. Rotorua and Taupo seem to have a poor record for violent youth offending don’t they?

Our advice to visitors is to be aware of your personal safety at all times and to keep to well frequented areas at night.
