Booted Out Of Bag End

November 30, 2010 5 comments

What’s all this then, we’ll have no trouble here. The casting agent involved in yesterday’s Hobbit ‘skingate’ scandal has been terminated from the job, according to a report in Stuff:

…The agent, an independent contractor, had also placed a newspaper ad saying female hobbit extras should have “light skin tones”.

A spokesman for Jackson’s Wingnut Films told AFP the contractor had now been dismissed.

“No such instructions were given, the crew member in question took it upon themselves to do that and it’s not something we instructed or condoned,” AFP reported.

In The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien described three races of Hobbits inhabiting the Middle Earth fantasy world which is the setting for the movies, including harfoots, who “were browner of skin” than the others.

However, Wingnut said anyone who met the height and age criteria was free to audition, regardless of skin colour.

“The crew member in question has been dismissed from the show,” he said. “It’s something we take very seriously.”…read the full report here

Hopefully Naz Humphreys will now be able to re-audition and realise her dream of getting a part in the films.

But yesterday we asked how many dark skinned extras had been chosen to play Hobbits in the ‘Rings trilogy?

If the answer is zero then doesn’t that suggest that there’s long term and institutionalised racism in New Zealand?

If so, Wingnut’s ‘sacking’ of the contracted agent looks like little more than a knee jerk reaction, due to the embarrassment caused and the risk of other countries boycotting the films.

We’re looking forward to seeing Hobbits of all races in the forthcoming films.

New Zealand’s Human Right Act 1993 prohibits discrimination on the grounds of

c) Religious belief:
(d) Ethical belief, which means the lack of a religious belief, whether in respect of a particular religion or religions or all religions:
(e) Colour:

Racial Discrimination Allegation Hits Hobbit Movie Casting Call

November 29, 2010 14 comments

The Age is this morning is reporting on a race row that has broken out in New Zealand over a casting call for hobbits, of all things.

British woman, Naz Humhpreys, a social policy researcher on a working holiday in NZ and who is of Pakistani descent, attended a Hobbit casting call for the forthcoming middle earth films, only to be told her skin tone wasn’t suitable – apparently Hobbits are fair skinned, who knew?

“It’s 2010 and I still can’t believe I’m being discriminated against because I have brown skin,” Humphreys told the newspaper.

“The casting manager basically said they weren’t having anybody who wasn’t pale-skinned.”

The newspaper (Ed. Dominion Post) said video footage showed the casting manager telling people at the audition: “We are looking for light-skinned people. I’m not trying to be — whatever. It’s just the brief. You’ve got to look like a hobbit.”…

…”I would love to be an extra,” she said. “But it just seemed like a shame because obviously hobbits are not brown or black or any other colour.

“They all look kind of homogenised beige and all derived from the Caucasian gene pool.” read more at The Age

Naz is said to have started a Facebook group called “Hire hobbits of all colours! Say no to hobbit racism!”

An example of institutionalised racism in New Zealand, or just a misconception on the part of one casting manager? To be sure you’d have to work your way back through hours of Lord of the Rings films and look for any Hobbits that have dark skins, if there aren’t any that suggests it may be the former.

Beehave Beehive – New Episode

November 27, 2010 Leave a comment

A new episode has been to the Beehave Beehive series of videos on YouTube.

A while ago we blogged about Steve and Angel’s campaign to draw attention to the lack of government control in private schools, since then the couple have been busy working away on a series of satirical political programmes.

We discovered that their films have been uploaded to YouTube. They’re linked into the work they’ve been doing on the the Education Amendment Bill #2 and to what the couple describe as the “government -sanctioned lawless world of private schools with regard to children’s welfare” in New Zealand.

Using a well developed sense of satire, and skills that put British impressionist Rory Bremner in the shade, Steven and Angel said

“Beehave is a new political satire show focusing its gaze like a laser on the kiwi parliament, aka the Beehive, along with the various high jinks of New Zealand’s politicians. You can watch future episodes here …YouTube or on our website, Safe to Tell, http://www.safetotell.net

and gave assurances that no politicians were harmed in the making of these viral videos, the first batch of which we embedded here.

The fifth episode has just been released, enjoy.

What people are saying about this blog

“I might go on there and add my complaints about the very low wages and the fact they cut the tails off dairy cows.”

“I totally agree with alot of the things said on the site. Most Kiwis know of the huge problems, but just don’t like being told it by a foreigner. I actually took the time and looked, on my way to work, 40km through good old rural NZ, and there was rubbish everywhere. In the streams, all along the sides of the road, on the road and in fields. Clean Green NZ is a total myth and a lie, I won’t even swim in the local river, let alone eat anything that comes out of it. I don’t go out at night into town unless I am working, as it is not safe. The issue shouldn’t be why are foreigners saying these things about NZ, it should be why aren’t Kiwis doing anything about the shitty state this country has gotten into?”

“The moaning on that site above takes on quite another level. I believe that many migrants leave their own country because of what they perceive as a lack of opportunity in their own. That they don’t “make it” in yet another country is because they fail to either recognise or grasp it.”

“true, but alot of people choose to come to NZ because of the way it is marketed overseas. Clean and Green, low crime rates, gorgeous beaches and fantastic weather, incredibly friendly locals, and so on…. When they get here and the image painted by Tourism NZ and the Embassy in London is a complete fabrication, they get a little bit upset, and who could blame them.”

“We all know that there are aspects of the clean, green that is a myth, but as a person who has been fortunate enough to have travelled and lived throughout the world, I can say hand on heart that apart from Sweden, Denmark, France and Australia no other country provides the lifestyle and opportunities for outdoor sports that we do.”

“What lifestyle? Alot of people say that the lifestyle in NZ is the best in the world, but what does it mean? What is unique about the “lifestyle”? And, also having lived all over the world (I have been to every continent and nearly every country) the outdoor sports in NZ are no where near as good as those in other countries. The skiing in Austria, Germany, France, the US all eclipse NZ. The watersports in Greece, the Balkans, the Baltic area, all match if not surpass NZ. Unfortunately, anything that NZ offers is available elsewhere in the world, normally to a higher standard.”

And this is how Kiwis see the Brits:

“Or they could just move to Spain!
It has everything most people want-sun,beaches,affordable housing and it’s only a quick trip back and forward to the UK to see family and friends.
If my partner wasn’t a Kiwi that is where I would choose over NZ anyday!”

“LOL – yes we see your sort on that programme Benidorm… the Poms that go to Spain all whinge over there too. Screeching for your mushy peas, train-smash for your pork pies, warm Watney’s Red Barrel and dropping your “h”s… Off you go.”

LOL
I think there are 2 types of Brits that go to live in Spain. The mushy pea, ‘don’t want any eat any foreign muck’, heavy drinking types have been hard hit by the recession …many of those ones have gone back to the UK. I can’t wait to see the Malaga beachfront again …now that the ‘bangers and mash’ crowd have closed up

“Hardly daffodil, they all screech in their appalling regional accents and expect the poor Spaniards to understand Inglisi…”

“Yeah there’s them and then there’s the British criminal element – oh wait they’re both the same.”

Top 5 things wrong with NZ:

For anyone wanting to get a feel for good old grass root opinions and issues in New Zealand you can’t go far wrong by logging on to the message boards at the NZ auction site Trademe.

Here’s a thread that was started on Wednesday about a topic that’s always guaranteed to get a good response. It drew the usual righteous indignation and denial, some people obviously didn’t understand the question and launched into what was right with NZ. However there were some who were capable of developing the theme further.

We picked up a distinct dissatisfaction with the justice system’s ability to deal effectively with crime, tax payers fed up with supporting a benefits culture, concerns over child welfare issues, problems with home affordability and New Zealand still being a country that’s divided on race with a lot of work to do to sort out both bigotry and racism…

100% Pure Rip Off:

Oh dear, bet the guys who coined the “100% Pure NZ” are cringing right now. It will be interesting to see how well the brand’s image survives this latest onslaught on the slogan that lends itself so easily to abuse. It is currently being used to highlight how expensive New Zealand has become.

It all started with an article in the NZ Herald under the header “NZ: 100% Pure Rip-off. Rip off New Zealand?” written by Peter Bills, an international writer for Independent News & Media…

Nice scenery, good wine, shame about the inbred psychopaths

This was found on a site called TrueSlant.com and we’re including it in our Kiwi Talk pages.

It was written by New Zealander Scott Alexander Young, aka ‘Jet Set Hobbo’, and is about the recently released New Zealand Institute’s Report that stated that New Zealand has one of the worst murder rates in the whole of the OECD.

We’re including it because it shows why some of the country’s brightest and most talented people leave and never return,  and how a once decent and peaceful society can be changed for the worse within a couple of generations…

Returning Kiwis views about NZ

There’s a great discussion going on today in the blogs section of the online New Zealand Herald, the topic centres around the number of expat New Zealanders returning to their homeland and their thoughts about it. It’s worth a read, if you have the time, because their comments are so similar to those of many migrants in the country. Read them here: “As an expat, what are your thoughts on returning home?“

Here’s a selection from the many, many pages of responses:…

Kiwi longs to escape cargo cult lifestyle

“This Kiwi Talk entry was taken from a thread on  ExpatExposed a self help and support forum for migrants in New Zealand.

Occasionally New Zealanders contribute to the discussion and their experiences demonstrate that it’s not just migrants who have problems. Locals have have them too and struggle to work out their feelings about a country that they’ve been conditioned for a lifetime to think of as ‘Godzone.’

If Kiwis are having a problem marrying up the reality with the illusion is it any wonder that migrants are finding it hard, even if they try to maintain a positive outlook on life?  This Kiwi’s account explains why so many of them leave (a quarter of the population live abroad) and why so few return:..

Pike River Miners “Shouldn’t Have Died” – Updated

November 26, 2010 Leave a comment

The Sydney Morning Herald published today a startling  interview with historian Gerry Morris, who grew up in a Greymouth mining family and who lost his grandfather in a mining accident near Greymouth in 1940. (For more about Mr Morris’ background read the article here.)

Mr Morris was critical of the way the in which the police “dragged out the information flows” which resulted in more anguish for the families, until Peter Whittall broke the news after the second explosion that all the men had likely perished.

He said he couldn’t see why families hadn’t been given more information and that the mining community was knowledgeable enough to be able to process it.

In one section of the interview he gave an indication that a change in both  mining regulations and the H&S enforcement regime in mines may lie at the root of why the disaster could have happened:

“Simply, it goes right back when mining regulations changed. Mining regulations were very, very prescriptive, the managing of coal mining changed to an OSH (occupational safety and health) regime where the responsibility for safety became a lot more blurred and a lot more generalised.”

The Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 introduced changes to mining safety laws and did away with the Mines Department, and regulation fell under the auspices of the OSH service of the Department of Labour, he said.

Pike had an “almost impossible” commercial imperative to get a return on the money poured into the mine, and were working under regulations less prescriptive than they once were, he said.

“If they had had people like the old regime of inspectors on the West Coast, and I think there’s only two mining inspectors left in New Zealand … you wouldn’t think the mine would be allowed to operate with these sort of gas issues.”

Greymouth was “just devastated”, he said.

“Everyone has got some connection with that mine.”

A lack of  on-site of mining inspectors was something that Pike River Coal  raised concerns about and it must surely form part of the terms of reference of the commission of inquiry

Update 27 November 2010

Two possible causes for the blast

Two possible causes for the initial blast have been postulated by NZ mine safety expert David Feickert, interviewed in The Australian

Feickert noted that the electrical system had broken down prior to the first explosion.

This would have stopped the main electric ventilators from working, Feickert said, and despite the mine’s natural ventilation system, methane was likely to have started building up.

Then there would have been a source of ignition, which could have been connected with the electrical problem, he said.

Feickert said another possibility was a gas outburst, where a pocket of methane in a seam developed such pressure behind it that it broke out and found its way to oxygen, which is required to ignite it.

Rescue Effort Flawed

Feickert also said that he thought the decision-making structure of the rescue effort “was deeply flawed and was inferior to that in Australia, where mining emergencies are handled by company management supported by mine inspectors and union-appointed safety officers.”

Management Struggled to Maintain Methane Levels

Former Pike River employee Brent Forrester, whose close friend Ricki Keane was among those killed in the explosion, told today’s Timaru Herald that “management struggled to maintain the methane levels, and safety concerns he and his crew raised were often ignored.” He said the mine “always had ventilation issues” and his gas detector would frequently go “off the charts”. The paper reported that “he said many of the methane sensors did not work or were not calibrated and the mine’s phone system needed to be upgraded”. Forrester explained that “the reason I didn’t push it too far [with management] was the fear of losing my job. The pressure is always on, they’re losing a lot of money, so they’re making you cut a lot of short-cuts”.  Source

Department of Labour Inquiry “Planned”
An inquiry into the Pike River Coal disaster is also being planned by the Department of Labour but they declined to reveal any key details about inspections at this mine, in an request written about by the NZPA on 22 November 2010. Again the issue of gas sensors has been raised:

A department spokesman declined to say whether key equipment — Waratah continuous miners and a Sandvik ABM20 bolter-miner — were fitted with detectors to shut down the machinery when methane levels became dangerous, or whether there were any automatic sensors in the mine to warn if methane was at potentially explosive levels.

“Information of this nature will form part of the department’s investigation and will not therefore be released until after the investigation,” he said.

The spokesman also declined to talk about an “outburst” of potentially inflammable gas in the mine last month, or problems with inflammable gas in the mine following the commissioning of the first one of the company’s two main underground fans.

“Our investigation of the incident at the mine will review all interactions with the (Pike River Coal) company, and until that is complete, we can not release any detailed information about them,” the spokesman said”…more on Yahoo News
